I am thankful of having bought a bookguide for Belgium. Without I probably would have never run into this incredible show.
It is has been my first carnival in a long, long time. It is a bit ironic that of all the cities in which I have lived, the only one that actually had (and still has) a carnival is my hometown. I have some far memories about that one, mostly wearing superheroes costumes and spraying my cousins faces with spray cans that thankfully were not toxic.
Aalst carnival however, was something else. Depply political and satirical, this carnival put up a show of irreverance with hundreds of rappresentation of local politicians and international ones, as well as celebrities and entire organizations that are mocked in rapid succession, one after the other.
For once, I was given the chance of laughing at the same news that would otherwise bring me down.
If you have the chance of attending, I warmly recommend it (warmly because it is in February and, as it happened with us, it can snow).
